Online Family Group Sheet

It's taken nearly 3 weeks but the Genealogical Society of Victoria now has an interactive online Family Group Sheet.  Like the Pedigree / Ancestry Chart, this was created to assist with the various types of Research Services available through the Genealogical Society of Victoria.

Although created for the GSV Research department, the uses are many and a bonus to everyone.  The Family Group Sheet is a PDF file set up as a form.  You can:
  • Complete and email the form to ensure the most productive outcome for your GSV Research Requests
  • Complete some / all of the fields and save the PDF file to your hard drive
  • Electronically input data into the form
  • Download the form
  • Print the form
  • Manually input data
  • Email completed forms to family and other researchers
As part of this exercise, each type of Research Service now has its own specific Research Request Form.

An online form has also been added for sending additional documents that support your Research Request - certificates, Family Group Sheets etc.

And be warned - each browser treats PDF Forms differently!  If you have problems completing the Form online, save the FORM to your hard drive and open it in Adobe Reader - all the features should then work.

Women matter at the GSV

Women at Work is the next seminar at the Genealogical Society of Victoria - coming up on Saturday 2 August.

It still surprises me the number of people researching ONLY the male line and ancestors and ignoring the role of women not only in their family history but in society in general.

How did your working women ancestors cope with the social issues that were current in the 19th and early 20th centuries?

How did they cope in the male dominated society?

This seminar includes these great topics:
  • Role of women in childcare and the 1890 Infant Life Protection Act
  • Women Lecturers / Speakers in Melbourne 1880-1905
  • Work undertaken by female convicts in Van Diemen's Land
  • Working class Brunswick women in the late 19th / early 20th century
  • Women as educators from early Victorian settlement

Come along to our seminar to hear our expert and knowledgeable speakers who have vast experience researching their topics.

  • Helen Doxford Harris OAM: professional genealogist and historian - well known for her indexes, publications and research, many involving women, children & infants.  She has been a local councillor and Mayor for Whitehorse City Council and Secretary of the Victorian branch of the Australian Local Government Women's Association -  http://helendoxfordharris.com.au/

  • Cheryl Griffin: local, social and family historian.  Her PhD explored the life of Doris McRae, teacher, unionist, peace and social activist.  Her other involvements are with the Female Convicts Research Centre and a study of Coburg during the First World War. - http://fightingthekaiser.blogspot.com.au/

  • Robbie Stockfeld: not only is Robbie a long term researcher she is also a volunteer at a number of genealogical, family history, and historical organisations throughout Victoria.  More importantly Robbie's business and passion involves the crafts handed down by our female ancestors - http://loftstudiodesigns.wordpress.com/outandabout/

Your only regret will be if you miss this seminar!

Online Pedigree / Ancestry Chart

You know how you plan to do something and it becomes a "gunna"?  At long last one of those "gunnas" is now actually online!

This interactive Pedigree / Ancestry Chart was created to assist with the various types of Research Services available through the Genealogical Society of Victoria.  You'll find links to the chart on that page.

Although created for the GSV Research department, the uses are many and a bonus to everyone.  The Pedigree / Ancestry Chart is a PDF file set up as a form.  You can:
  • Complete and email the form to ensure the most productive outcome for your GSV Research Requests
  • Complete some / all of the fields and save the PDF file to your hard drive
  • Electronically input data into the form
  • Download the form
  • Print the form
  • Manually input data
  • Email completed forms to family and other researchers
Obviously there will be other forms to come - many specific to the different types of GSV Research Services - but the Family Group Sheet will also be converted to a PDF form in the not too distant future.  Keep following this Blog to find out when the Family Group Sheet becomes available.

And be warned - every browser treats PDF Forms differently!  To ensure it works properly, save the FORM to your hard drive and open it in Adobe Reader - all the features should then work.
